2. y 2 = 4ax for a >0. The parabola is, therefore, symmetrical about x-axis, which is the axis of symmetry of parabola.
y 2 = -4ax for a < 0, x may have negative value or zero but no positive value. Therefore, in this case the parabola opens to left. The axis of symmetry is again the x-axis.
x 2 = 4ay for a > 0. In this case parabola opens upward. The axis of symmetry is the y-axis.
y 2 = -4ay for a < 0.The parabola opens downward and the axis of symmetry is again the y-axis.
or
When the second degree variable is x, the parabola opens up or down. The two are differentiated by the coefficient of y: up for positive and down for negative. When the second degree variable is y, the parabola opens to the left or right. The two are differentiated by the coefficient of x: right for positive and left for negative.
- REFLECTION:
When I was studying the modules, I feel like nothing goes into my brain even though it's easy and my mind is floating. I think that's just what my self feels about math, but I have still the mindset to work hard and achieve good scores.
I challenged myself to strive harder since math is not my strongest subject. I had asked questions to my friends and classmates so I could understand. I feel like my effort is not enough so I'll do better. Aja!
